THE ONE THING YOU WANT TO KEEP DOING EVERY DAY UNTIL YOU DIE.
I don’t know how many of you have seen the movie Shawshank Redemption. Well, if you haven’t seen it yet, it is a movie about how an innocent man gets sent to jail for a crime that he never committed — the murder of his beloved yet cheating wife.
I meant it was quite seemingly obvious to everyone — the man who loved his some much just could not stand the thought of her in the arms of another man and so he killed her. Yet, this wasn’t the truth.
But this is not the lesson within this story, it is the fact that this man, shocked at what had happened to him, never complained. He never openly nagged about the thing that he could not change. Rather, he did something else.
He dug a tunnel with a small hammer, every day for fifteen years until he escaped.
This was Discipline — consistent self-discipline.
Discipline is that voice in your head that says, “do it now.” It is you doing what you ought to do when you should be doing it. It is you keeping your mind on what you ought to do when you should be doing it.
Yes, discipline is the one thing you want to do every day.
Yet, how do we do this?
Have a vision
It is easier to be disciplined when you always know where you are going. We could even say that vision is the fuel that discipline runs. This is why it is important to always have clear personal goals you are working towards per time and per project.
It is mainly about starting
It is kinda like an old generator. It may take a little strength to get it going, but once it is started, it just keeps going.
People often think that being disciplined is more about already having the strength to stay for the long haul. It actually is not. It is more about deciding to do the little YOU CAN whenever you can. It is mainly about looking at what you have got to do and not procrastinating on it.
Discipline is about making the right decisions daily.
Know your priorities
It is easy to be disciplined with a thing when you won’t do that thing with all of your heart. However, many of the things we get to do these days aren’t things we want to do with all of our hearts.
It helps to do things with the understanding of why you are doing them.
The greatest thing you can do for yourself is to build a habit of consistent daily discipline.
